Photos: Over $350,000 Raised at Under One Roof

On the evening of Thursday, November 29, the Artscape Foundation together with Presenting Sponsor The Daniels Corporation hosted Under One Roof, an event to raise funds for Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park. Over $350,000 net was raised for capital and programming needs, successfully capping off the $10 million campaign goal for the centre.

The Daniels Corporation took a leadership role in reaching out to building industry colleagues to lend their support for the centre, such as Innocon, Toro Aluminum, C.I.P. Group, 4-Star Drywall, Speedy Electric, University Plumbing and Heating Ltd. Over 300 people gathered for an evening of dinner and performances at the city’s newest cultural hub.

The Daniels Corporation’s President, Mitchell Cohen, welcomed guests to Under One Roof and introduced the performers, which included Juno-nominated performers Jackie Richardson and Sterling Jarvis, multidisciplinary artist Anne-Marie Woods (aka. Amani), local talent from 16-year-old spoken word artist Mustafa and pianist Cecilia NguyenTran, and Daniels Spectrum tenants COBA Collective of Black Artists and Regent Park School of Music.

Mustafa, a 16-year-old spoken word artist from Regent Park, kicked off the evening with a new poem composed especially for Under One Roof. It was preceded by a screening of a 2009 performance of “A Single Rose”, a poem Mustafa wrote when he was only 12 years old.

Guests enjoyed a seated dinner in Ada Slaight Hall, the centre’s main performance and event venue. The event was catered by the neighbouring PaintBox Bistro.

Classical pianist and former Regent Park resident Cecilia NguyenTran performed solo throughout the first course. Cecilia was one of the youth featured in our Regent Park Arts video series that was filmed this past summer.

Jackie Richardson and Sterling Jarvis performed two songs, “My Piece of the City” and “Dancing Down the Avenue”, with the Regent Park School of Music Choir.

Both songs were composed by Mitchell Cohen as part of a trilogy of songs that tell a story of some of the significant milestones that have taken place throughout the Regent Park revitalization. Daniels’ Give A Gift Get A Song initiative will soon enable individuals to purchase the trilogy with proceeds supporting future programming at Daniels Spectrum through the Artscape Foundation.

Artscape President & CEO Tim Jones thanked attendees for their generous contributions which helped raise over $350,000 for the Artscape Foundation. These funds will be used to complete the capital investment in Daniels Spectrum and ensure it is sustainable over the long term.

Dancers from COBA Collective of Black Artists performed a contemporary piece.

Tom Dutton, Senior Vice President of The Daniels Corporation, thanked everyone for coming and for their incredible contribution towards Daniels Spectrum.

Anne-Marie Woods (aka. Amani) led students from the Regent Park School of Music on the song “Under One Roof”, which pays tribute to people of diverse cultures who have made their own journeys from around the world coming together ‘under one roof’ at Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park.

After dinner, Executive Chef Chris Klugman of PaintBox Bistro dazzled guests by transforming the Artscape Lounge and lobby into a dessert buffet.

Under One Roof was made possible by the tremendous support of the following sponsors:
