Meet Ceramist Julie Moon

Julie Moon is a ceramic artist whose studio is located in the Artscape Distillery Studios.   A graduate of OCAD with an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, she has exhibited extensively in Canada and the United States.

Julie’s love of graphics, pattern and fashion has continuously inspired her creative endeavours.  Her pieces, whether sculptural or functional, are formed by hand and carefully painted with detail and precision.

People tend to be most familiar with Julie’s whimsical and unique ceramic accessories line of earrings, necklaces and brooches that is carried at a number of shops in Toronto.  Julie’s sculptural practice is her primary focus in the studio.

Julie just returned home after a 10-week residency in Montana where she was able to concentrate on making a new body of work, revisiting some old ideas and exploring new ones.  When it comes to her work as an artist, autonomy and spontaneity are of paramount importance.

“I enjoy the process of making and generally don’t like having a defined plan,” says Julie.  “This way, things reveal themselves through the process and I can let go of certain expectations. “

These days Julie is busy finishing a collection of botanical sculptures for a solo exhibition with Birch Contemporary, entitled “Acid Garden” that opens November 24.
