Artscape Gibraltar Point – September Update
Artscape Gibraltar Point invites you to be a part of, volunteer or help spread the word about a number of island happenings over the coming months!
September marks the launch of Winter Island, Artscape Gibraltar Point’s annual, juried Community Arts Residency Award. Last year, Winter Island drew over 250 people to the islands during the cold winter months to participate in projects created by our select artists in residence. We also had over artists from Toronto and as far away as England apply for this residency program. Interested artists can apply by October 8, 2018 at 4:00 PM
Now in its fourth year, Winter Island is a unique, juried artist-in-residence program aimed at emerging, mid-career and established artists, hosted at Artscape Gibraltar Point.
The aim of the Winter Island program is to recognize up to five artists each year who have demonstrated a unique artistic voice. This residency is intended to provide them with a month of distraction-free studio time to create an exciting body of work that seeks to collaborate with the artist community at Artscape Gibraltar Point and on the Toronto Islands and engage the broader community in an interactive way.
Selected Artists Receive:
- a complimentary month-long stay at Artscape Gibraltar Point including a private studio and bedroom
- ferry tickets (to a maximum of 8 round trips)
- $100/wk food or materials stipend
- promotion of their residency and project with local media
- promotion of their residency and project via Artscape’s social media channels
- opportunity to present these works/projects to the public as a part of a Winter Island Group Exhibition to take place at the conclusion of the residency series at Artscape Youngplace Hallway Galleries and vitrines in May/June 2019

In September, Rogue Wave Outdoor Sculpture & Art Installation Exhibition, returned to the Toronto Islands after almost a decade long hiatus, and Artscape Gibraltar Point was pleased to play a role in supporting the re-birth of this Island community-driven initiative. In recognition of islander’s efforts and those of the City of Toronto Parks department in re-launching this initiative, we hosted Rogue Vibes: A Celebration of Community, Culture & Collaboration this past weekend.
Building on the success of our Island Vibes Art & Dance party last year, Rogue Vibes brought together Artscape Gibraltar Point, Rogue Wave and our across the harbour neighbours The Powerplant Contemporary Art Gallery to present a day of dancing, food, performance art and music provided by J E L L Y Djs; Sammy Rawal, Tam-ika and Diego Armand. Check out the Rogue Wave exhibits focusing on the theme of our changing relationships with water and land on display on the Island through October 27, 2018. Find the exhibits here.
