Monica Mei Chiu is Artscape Daniels Launchpad’s new Director of Programs. Her unique journey into creative entrepreneurship has led her to work across the globe in fashion capitals like New York City and Hong Kong.
Having studied business at University of Toronto and fashion at Ryerson University, Monica is the founder of her own fashion line, co-founder of WhatImWearing — the world’s first style-sharing mobile app before the term “selfie” was even invented — and co-founder of the Shop Society.
With this experience at her back, she understands better than most the struggles of creative entrepreneurship and what it means to grow a business in a rapidly changing economy with shifting consumer demands and digital disruption.
“What I want to do at Launchpad is take my own experience as an entrepreneur, as well as the experiences of our Launchpad community and determine what kind of programming we can serve up to really help creatives find success in their career,” Monica says.
“Launchpad is a gorgeous 30,000 sq. ft. facility decked out with state-of-the-art technology and equipment,” she says. “But what excites me the most is that this is a place where you can not only think about what to do, you can create it, and market it, and have access to other collaborators.”
For Monica, being at Launchpad is about more than just the space. Her goal is to develop #LaunchpadLearning programs that will really give creative entrepreneurs an advantage in their careers.
“What can we do to help you? What skills can we teach you so that you can make a career out of your creativity? What supports do you need to thrive?” Monica wants to hear from you! Shoot her an email or use the hashtag #LaunchpadLearning to share ideas with her on Twitter.
