Make sure to stop by the Artscape Youngplace Hallway Galleries in July to see Toronto’s rising photography talent, on behalf of The Centre for Emerging Artists and Designers (CEAD) at OCADU. Opening on July 2nd and running until July 26, five recent photography graduates have been selected by a jury to showcase their work in a summer exhibition.
Sabrina Carrizo Sztainbok, Margaret Cornell Kirk, Lily Lü Yùnrú, Bidemi Oloyede, and Alejandro Rizzo Nervo were all selected through a jury including Artscape’s own Naia Wang, Assistant Manager of Galleries and Exhibitions, along with OCADU faculty members and a graduate of the CRCP program.
One such photographer, Sabrina Carrizo Sztainbok, is interested in creating believable absurdity and is influenced by magical realism. She considers her work to be “banal absurdity” — everything has an aspect of fiction that also tries to pass as reality, and usually includes something a little absurd and humorous, exemplified by the following photographs by the artist.
In addition to the exhibition the jury and curatorial committee at Artscape Youngplace will select an artist from the group and award them a featured solo exhibition during the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival in May 2020. Additionally, an essay will be commissioned from the CRCP graduate to accompany the solo exhibition.
Join us for the Opening Reception: July 4, 2019, 6:30 – 9:00 PM
