On July 13, Urban Arts held their bi-annual Beats.Mind.Movement Showcase at the new Rockport Theatre at Artscape Weston Common. The showcase featured emerging musical talent that have thrived through the Urban Arts free 5-month music program. Performers like Frost, IP The Poet, Ariexile, MAZE, Lucid, Shanairah, ID, Seven Seas, Mooky and Will Tha Artist, all passionately displayed their talent on the stage:
In each cycle of Urban Arts’ Beats.Mind.Movement program, 15 youth, between the ages of 16-29, are offered a chance to be mentored and trained on essential skills to succeed in the music industry.
Each participant chooses a musical project to focus on during the Beats.Mind.Movement program, and Program Mentors coach them through individualized learning plans based on their own creative aspirations. They are also trained on industry-standard equipment and software. They also learn by attending industry events, field trips, and through other educational opportunities.
But Beats.Mind.Movement is just one of the many programs at UrbanArts. As an incubator for local arts, they offer a range of programs led by professional artists in visual, digital, culinary and media arts, theatre, dance and music. UrbanArts is committed to the goal of building inclusive, engaged communities by enriching peoples’ lives through the arts, culture and heritage, with programs, services and resources delivered within the former City of York boundaries, with a focus on York South-Weston.
Now with a home at Artscape Weston Common, UrbanArts is hoping to grow the Beats.Mind.Movement platform. Make sure to check out their upcoming programs and events.
