In 2008, an organization was born to combat the stigma of HIV/AIDS within the Black/Caribbean/African populations here in Canada and internationally . BrAIDS for AIDS uniquely utilizes a culturally appropriate response of hair braiding to address the concerns and share knowledge that surrounds the taboo topics of sex, relationships and status. When a trained hairstylists braids hair for upwards of 3+hours, it’s a good amount of time to learn about a client and to share relevant knowledge to help prevent the spread and challenge misconceptions for those living with HIV/AIDS. This time spent together creates a unique opportunity to ensure women are taking care of themselves holistically and this is where programming to empower these women is vital.

BRAIDS FOR AIDS organizes an annual BrAIDathon where top hairstylists give of their time and skills to get clients ready just in time for Toronto Caribbean Carnival. This year’s BrAIDathon will have highly anticipated workshops on Hairbraiding 101, Caring for Natural Hair, and Weave and Lace frontal installations. There will also be a Makeup Tutorial with makeup packages for registrants. There is also a Black owned Marketplace that is free for all to attend from 1-6pm. This year the 2023 guest speaker is Shannon Boodram, best selling author of two books on sexual relationships, she also has an upcoming TV show called Marriage Pack on Roku and is a thought-provoking blogger and social media influencer. Flow 98.7fm will be live to air and there is so much more to list but let’s just say it’s an opportunity to learn the art of braiding and hair care, network with awesome individuals and businesses, and come out to have a great time! Your support goes towards raising awareness and funds for programs to empower marginalized women.
