SKETCH Artist Talk
February 24, 2015 @ 8:00 am - 10:30 am
We’re happy to announce our second SKETCH Artist Talk on Tuesday, February 24, from 1:00PM-3:30PM in our Lower Level studio. This is a FREE event and open to the public!
We’ll be joined by Anahita Azrahimi and Keli Safia Maksud, two contemporary artists based in Toronto who will talk about their art practices and creative processes, and share their works.
Anahita Azrahimi is a visual artist, performing-arts consultant, and underwater aficionado based in Toronto, Canada. She draws inspiration for her intricate and whimsical collage paintings from her memory of surreal landscapes, microscopic terrains, and cut-outs from her chosen fashion magazine–the one and only Vogue. She weaves the elements of these realms into an evocative and abundant feast of colour and texture.
Her paintings and video works have been exhibited in galleries, events and festivals in Toronto and San Francisco, and are held in private collections across North America and Europe. Her first solo exhibition, “Mashup,” was chosen as the Toronto Star’s Critic’s Choice of the Week in 2009.
Keli Safia Maksud is Kenyan-Tanzanian visual artist based in Toronto. Concerned with the history of the colonial encounter and its effect on memory, Maksud’s interdisciplinary practice explores contemporary visual languages in order to investigate legacies of colonialism.
At the centre of her practice is an interrogation of the ways in which images are used to give form to the construction of an identity, a community or a nation, and examine not only that which is made to ʻappearʼ in these representations, but also what is omitted. Maksud graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2007 and her works have been shown in the United States.
