From lost income and gigs to cancelled performances and exhibitions, COVID-19 has had unprecedented effects on artists and arts organizations across Canada. To respond to this crisis, Artscape launched Together for Artists. This multi-pronged initiative aims to empower artists to thrive, both during this period of economic shutdown and social distancing and beyond, by providing support in three areas of greatest need: relief, remuneration, and recovery.

Rent Deferral and Abatement 

For several months, Artscape has offered rent deferral and rent abatement programs to over 400 artists and artist-led families and creative businesses who live and work within Artscape communities.


Launchpad Learning Online – Free daily virtual programming 

Launchpad Learning Online has offered free daily programming for creative entrepreneurs. These interactive workshops led by industry leaders have supported artists in developing their creative businesses, so they can develop the skills and ability to thrive economically. To date, over 6400 people have attended these workshops and, as part of Artscape’s remuneration efforts, over 40 creative entrepreneurs have been employed to lead workshops.

Artscape Atelier – Paid work opportunities for artists 

Through the Together for Artists initiative, our newest social enterprise, Artscape Atelier is focused on partnering with a number of sector leading development companies to transform the GTA into a living gallery of artworks that share a message in this present moment. Our partners are providing spaces and extending paid opportunities to create these canvases to local artists, designers and creatives.

ArtsUNITE/UNITE des arts

Artscape, in collaboration with a number of diverse artistic partners, is pleased to announce the launch of artsUNITE / UNITÉ des arts, a new online wayfinding and support platform developed for the creative community across Ontario. Spearheaded by Artscape as part of its Together for Artists COVID-19 response initiative, with seed funding from the Toronto Artscape Foundation, artsUNITE / UNITÉ des arts offers a centralized, holistic virtual hub for wayfinding resources and opportunities to assist with relief and recovery from the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis. This online platform is intended to be co-created by the arts and culture sectors across Ontario and artists, arts and cultural organizations and arts funders are invited to share content.

Toronto Artscape Foundation Launchpad Bursaries

Supporting the recovery of the arts and culture sector, the Toronto Artscape Foundation Launchpad Bursary program is designed for creatives looking to launch or develop their projects and businesses at Artscape Daniels Launchpad. These bursaries provide access to much-needed facilities and equipment to develop creative work, including a state-of-the-art Digital Media Lab and specialized creative studio spaces in digital fabrication, electronics, woodworking, textiles and fashion, and jewellery and fine metals.

Community Access Program 

Artscape Daniels Launchpad is now accepting applications for the Artscape Daniels Launchpad Community Access Program. In response to the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, free access will be provided to the Artscape Daniels Launchpad venue space to host fundraising and recovery event efforts for the Toronto arts community—from September through to December 2020.

To support the Together for Artists initiative, Artscape is committed to raising $5 million dollars to support the initiative, with half this amount being raised through philanthropic contributions to the Toronto Artscape Foundation.
